About This Tool

A free worksheet generator for Chinese teachers, tutors, parents, and learners.

Why it exists

Making a decent pinyin worksheet by hand is tedious. You open a word processor, fight with a table, try to get the grid squares evenly sized, and discover at the printer that the columns overflowed onto a second line. Twenty minutes later you have one page — and next week you need a different one.

This tool reduces that to a paste and a click. Type or upload a vocabulary list, choose a mode, print. What comes out is properly aligned: each character gets its own grid cell, pinyin sits directly above the character it belongs to, and the column count adapts to the grid size and paper so that nothing wraps unexpectedly.

How it works

Everything runs in your browser using JavaScript. There is no backend, no database, and no account. Your word list is not uploaded anywhere — when you pick an Excel or CSV file, the file is read locally by the browser and parsed on your own machine. You can disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and the generator will keep working.

Pinyin comes from an open-source dictionary. Because Chinese is full of characters with several readings, the software makes context-sensitive guesses — usually correct for common words, occasionally wrong for rare ones. Proofread before printing.

The grids, briefly

GridWhat it looks likeBest for
Tianzi grid (田字格)Square split by a horizontal and vertical centre lineBeginners learning character proportion
Mizi grid (米字格)Tianzi grid plus both diagonalsComplex characters with many strokes
Four-line grid (四线三格)Four horizontal rules forming three bandsPinyin handwriting — the baseline and ascenders map onto the bands
Square / underlinePlain box or a single ruleQuick practice, older students, saving ink

The "Add Pinyin Grid" option stacks a four-line grid above the character grid, so a single row covers both pronunciation and writing.

The four exercise modes

Turning on "Include Answer Key" appends a full answer key as the last page — off by default, so it can never end up on a student copy. The key has its own Print Answer Key Only button.

Three more controls matter for younger classes: Pinyin Tone Marks hides every diacritic for plain-syllable practice (guide here), Size Adjustment enlarges every cell, four-line band and glyph together (115% suits grade 1), and Blank Cells After Each Word fixes how many empty boxes follow every word, so the page stays even instead of trailing off.

Getting a clean print

Cost

The generator is free and always will be. Hosting is paid for by advertising, which is why you will see some on this site. No feature is locked behind a payment, and there is no upsell inside the printed worksheet.
