How to use this generator

5 steps
  1. Step 1: Enter your vocabulary. Paste your word list — one word per line or space separated — into the text box, or upload an Excel/CSV file. The first column is used.
  2. Step 2: Choose your exercise type. Mixed Worksheet gives you a copy page and a dictation page in one file. Copy & Trace is tracing practice, Dictation tests recall, and Annotated Reading prints pinyin above each character.
  3. Step 3: Customize the layout. Choose Simplified or Traditional Chinese, pick the grid style and size, set the paper size and margins, and toggle tone colors and the four-line pinyin grid.
  4. Step 4: Fix any reading you disagree with. Click the small pencil next to any pinyin syllable to override it — useful for polyphonic characters. Your corrections are remembered in this browser.
  5. Step 5: Print and teach. Click Print / Save PDF to get a print-ready worksheet — or save it as a PDF for your class drive. The answer key is off by default; switch it on and you can print it on its own.

Features & FAQ

Customizable Pinyin Tone Marks

Toggle or adjust tone marks on pinyin lines for beginner-friendly practice sheets — print with full diacritics, or strip them for tone-discrimination drills.

Traditional Chinese + Pinyin Support

Upload or type Traditional Hanzi and generate printable tracing sheets with Hanyu Pinyin. Note: this tool uses Hanyu Pinyin, not Bopomofo (Zhuyin).

Can I save as PDF?

Yes, simply click the "Print / Save PDF" button and choose "Save as PDF" in your browser's print dialog.

Can I print only the answer key?

Yes. Turn on Include Answer Key, then use the Print Answer Key Only button on the answer page. The key is a separate page at the end of the file, so it never lands on a student copy.

Does it support pinyin writing grids?

Yes. Check the "Add Four-Line Pinyin Grid" option to generate standard four-line grids (四线三格) above the Tianzi grids, perfect for practicing pinyin handwriting.

How do I use these worksheets for dictation?

Select the "Dictation" mode. The generator will only display the pinyin, leaving blank Tianzi grids for students to write the Chinese characters from memory. Check "Include Answer Key" to print a separate answer page.

A polyphonic character is read the wrong way. Can I fix it?

Click the pencil icon next to that syllable and type the reading you want. Your correction applies to that word only and is saved in your browser, so it is still there next time.

What is the difference between Tianzi Grid and Mizi Grid?

The Tianzi grid (田字格) has a cross in the middle to help students balance the character, which is great for beginners. The Mizi grid (米字格) adds diagonal lines, providing more guidance for complex characters.

Can I use these worksheets in my classroom?

Yes! All generated worksheets are free to print and distribute for personal, classroom, and tutoring use. You do not need to credit us.

Can I generate worksheets for Traditional Chinese characters?

Yes. This worksheet maker supports Traditional Chinese characters with Hanyu Pinyin. It does not support Bopomofo (Zhuyin Fuhao). See the guide: How to make Traditional Chinese worksheets with Hanyu Pinyin.

Can I adjust or hide pinyin tone marks?

Yes. Pick Hide tone marks in the Pinyin Tone Marks setting to print plain syllables, or click the pencil next to any syllable to adjust a single reading. More in: How to hide or adjust tone marks on Chinese pinyin worksheets.

Is my word list saved online?

No. Your data never leaves your device. All processing happens locally in your browser. We do not upload or store your vocabulary lists.

The Importance of Tianzi Grids in Chinese Handwriting

When learning Chinese, understanding stroke order and character proportions is crucial. The traditional Tianzi grid provides a perfect square boundary, helping learners visualize the center and balance of each character. Combined with standard four-line pinyin grids, students can master both pronunciation and writing simultaneously. Whether you are a Mandarin teacher or a homeschool parent, using structured, printable worksheets is the most effective way to build muscle memory and confidence in Chinese writing.
