How to Make Traditional Chinese Worksheets with Hanyu Pinyin

For heritage Chinese schools, weekend programs, and teachers working with Traditional characters.

Most free worksheet generators online are built for Simplified Chinese — paste a Traditional character and you either get a missing glyph, a simplified conversion you did not ask for, or pinyin that no longer matches the character. If you teach in a heritage weekend school, a Taiwanese or Hong Kong community program, or a family that keeps Traditional characters at home, that mismatch makes the worksheet useless.

Pinyin Worksheet Maker handles Traditional Chinese directly: it keeps your characters Traditional on the printed sheet and annotates them with Hanyu Pinyin (the romanisation system used in mainland China and taught in most overseas Mandarin programs).

Important: this tool produces Hanyu Pinyin, not Bopomofo (Zhuyin Fuhao). If your classroom uses 注音符號 — common in Taiwan — this generator is not the right fit. Everyone looking for a traditional Chinese pinyin worksheet with Hanyu Pinyin: read on.

Step by step

  1. Paste your Traditional word list. One word, phrase, or sentence per line — for example 感謝、快樂、您好嗎。You can also upload an Excel or CSV file; the first column is used.
  2. Set Character Set to Traditional Chinese. The setting sits right under the exercise type. A note under it reminds you: Traditional Chinese comes with Hanyu Pinyin, no Bopomofo.
  3. Pick an exercise type. Copy & Trace for a traditional hanzi tracing sheet, Dictation for recall practice, Mixed Worksheet for both pages in one file, or Annotated Reading for running text with pinyin above each character.
  4. Check the readings. The pinyin dictionary is context-sensitive and usually right, but polyphonic characters deserve a glance. Click the pencil icon next to any syllable to adjust it — your correction is remembered in your browser.
  5. Print or save as PDF. Letter and A4 are both supported, and the layout adapts to the paper you choose.

What the generator does with Traditional input

Who is this for?

Typical users: overseas Chinese weekend schools that maintain Traditional characters while teaching Hanyu Pinyin; tutors whose students read Traditional at home but will transition to Simplified later; and adult learners who prefer Traditional characters for cultural or family reasons. If that is your classroom, generate your first traditional Chinese pinyin worksheet here — it is free, needs no account, and everything runs in your browser.
